オタクは英語が得意になれる！…かも（試験結果報告） 2009年 09月 04日

　毎度、当ブログ管理人のぼうずです。生きてます。

　先日（７月26日）の第148回TOEIC試験の結果が分かったので報告しておきます。765点（L;485、R;280）でした。

　具体的目標として800点以上を目指していましたので、結局のところ目標達成はできていないのですが、よくやった方だと思ってます。

　基本的にTOEICの新公式問題集3冊と当ブログ更新のみの勉強でしたが、「聞取り」に関して高得点を上げていますので、このサイトのような勉強方も十分にアリなのだと思います。　

　オタクは英語が得意になれる！…かもしれません。この機会に海外版日本アニメを使った勉強方、一度検討してみてはいかがでしょうか？

すいません。暫く更新止まります＞ｍ（＿＿）ｍ 2009年 07月 30日

　毎度、当ブログ管理人のぼうずです。

　実は8月から新生活を開始する為、引越し作業等でバタバタとして更新ができていません。すいませんｍ（＿＿）ｍ。

　さて、前回まで続けてきた「オタクの英語勉強術」ですが、実は先日7月26日のTOEIC試験に向けての勉強の一環でもありました（結果としては、聞き取り能力の維持・向上に役立ったと自負しています）。

　現在は『カウボーイビバップ（Cowboy Bebop）』の視聴に入っており、本当は『ビバップ』で更新をしていきたいのですが、これから移る新居にはネット環境がありませんし、生活が落ち着くまでは、当分まともな更新はできないように思います。

　そのような訳で、暫く更新が滞ると思われますので、この場を使って偶に覗いて下さる方々に一言お断りしておきます。

Planetesで英語を学ぶ（26回目・最終回！） 2009年 07月 25日

　なんだかんだありましたが、「オタクの英語勉強術」も26回目です。本更新の意図については２００９年６月３日の記事「オタクの英語勉強術、開始にあたり」をご覧下さい。

　一応かいつまんで説明すると、私がその日に観た海外吹替版の日本のアニメ作品から、重度のネタバレにならず、かつ日常生活で適度に使えそうな１フレーズと、簡単な会話を抜き出して勉強してみようという企画です。

　当分の間、元ネタにするのは、私のアニメ人生３本の指に入る名作『プラネテス』の英語版です（※下記のリンクも参考にして下さい）。

　それでは、Phase 26 「そして巡りあう日々」（※Episode 26: And the Days we Chance Upon…）を使って勉強してみます。

＜今回の一言①＞

日本語：私、ムリしてたのかな。
英語字幕：Maybe I pushed myself too hard.
吹替英語：Maybe I just pushed myself too hard.

解説：「push oneself（努力する、頑張る）」です。

使用例：I thought I had to update everyday.Year,It's stupid idea.Maybe I pushed myself too hard...

日本語：愛の反対は憎しみじゃなく、無関心。どうでもいい相手なら嫌いにもならないさ。

英語字幕(吹替英語)：The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s apathy. If you didn’t care what they thought, you wouldn’t hate them.

解説：「apathy（無感動、無関心）」です。

使用例：He've got apathy toward his work.

解説：「premeditate（前もって計画する」から、「premadetated crime（計画的犯行）」です。

使用例：Police said it was premeditated murder.

解説：「compliment（褒め言葉、お世辞）」で、「at least（最低でも）」です。

日本語：ま、今日のは“愛のムチ”ってことにしておきましょう。
英語字幕（吹替英語）：Well, let’s just think of what you did as an example of tough love.

解説：「tough（①厳しい・情け容赦ない、②タフな、手ごわいなど）」から、「example of tough love（愛のムチ）」です。

使用例：I realized what he did might be an example of tough love.

解説：「turn 甲 into 乙（甲を乙に変える）」、「philosopher（哲人、賢人」です。あと「make 甲 of 乙（甲を乙にする）」です。

使用例：I got angry because he made an example of me.

解説：「get along with ～（人と仲良くやっていく）」、「middle（中間物⇒媒介者、仲裁者）」です。

使用例：I didn't get along with my bother when I was child.

吹替英語：I gotcha! You said “n”. You lose! I win.

解説：さてさて、英語だと”例のシーン”はどうなったんでしょうね。興味がある方は是非ご自分で海外版を確認下さい（笑）。

　一応かいつまんで説明すると、私がその日に観た海外吹替版の日本のアニメ作品から、重度のネタバレにならず、かつ日常生活で適度に使えそうな１フレーズと、簡単な会話を抜き出して勉強してみようという企画です。

　当分の間、元ネタにするのは、私のアニメ人生３本の指に入る名作『プラネテス』の英語版です（※下記のリンクも参考にして下さい）。

　それでは、Phase 25 「惑い人」（※Episode 25: The Lost）を使って勉強してみます。

＜今回の一言①＞

日本語：非常識な成長しやがって…もっと地球のこととか考えて生きろ。っていうか、もう食うな。

英語字幕：You’re growing like a weed, boy…Show a little more consideration for the Earth when you’re living down here! Or more to the point, quit eating.

吹替英語： You’re growing like a weed, boy…You should show a little more consideration for the Earth! Or more to the point, quit eating.

解説：好きな台詞です（笑）。

「consideration for（～への思いやり）」、「quit ～ing（～するのをやめる）」です。あと「the point(要点、重点)」で「or more to the point(っていうか)」は面白い言い方かと思います。

使用例：You shouldn't buy the clothes you don't need. or more to the point stop wasting money!

日本語：口先だけの決意じゃなかった。断ち切るつもりだった。
英語字幕：My determination wasn’t all talk. I really did intend to put an end to it.

解説：「determination（決意）」、「intend to ～（意図して～する、～するつもりである）」、「intention（意図、意志）」です。あと動詞前に「do」を置くことで強調する形になります。

使用例：She did have intention to tell him the truth.

解説：「one's fault（失敗の責任、罪）」、「thank for（～に対して感謝する）」です。

使用例①：Do you think it was my fault?

解説：「connect(結びつける、関係づける)」「bind（結ぶ、縛る）」です。

使用例：She's bound him with his hands behind his back and---.

日本語：俺の宇宙って、ちっぽけだったんだよ。確かにいろんな悩みや答えが出ないことって、いっぱいあるんだけど。だけどさ、この世に宇宙の一部じゃないものなんてなくって、俺ですら繋がっていて、それで初めて宇宙なんだって。なんかそれでいいのかなって。

英語字幕：My idea of space was too small. Sure, there’s a lot of painful staff and questions without answers, but there’s nothing in this world that isn’t part of space. I realized that even I’m connected to it, that those connections are what make up space. I realized that maybe I’m okay with that.

解説：こういう場合の「way」は「away」の省略形で、「ずっと、はるかに、うんと」という強調の意味になります。「make up（構成する）」です。

使用例：My idea of studying Engilsh was just way too small. Sure, there's a lot of really painful staff to go through and questions without easy answers, but I've learned that there's many way to study. I realized that even watching animation in English is the one of them. I realized that maybe I'm okay with that if I can keep my motivation to study.

日本語：俺は認めないぞ。宇宙がそんなに甘くてたまるかってんだ。

解説：この場合、「buy（意見や人などを信じる）」という意味です。

使用例：I don't buy what he said because he always tells a lie.

日本語：一人で生きて、一人で死んで、独りで…何で満足できるんですか。バカみたい…宇宙は独りきりじゃ広すぎるのに。

吹替英語：Living alone and dying alone…alone…How can it be satisfied with that? It’s stupid. Space is too big to face all alone.

解説：「be satisfied with ～(～に満足している）」、そして「face（向き合う、立ち向かう）」です。

使用例：I think you have to face the fact that your friends aren't satisfied with your excuse.

解説：「Last will and testament（遺言状）」ですが、「will」だけでも遺言という意味はあります。「there's no telling when（いつ～するか分からない）」です。

使用例：If you buy a car, you should have insurance. There's no telling when you might have accident.

解説：「何淋しいこと言っちゃてるんですか！」⇒「That's gonna be the coldest thing I've ever heard」なのは中々面白い表現だと思います。一応、「matter（重要である）」、「the ～est I've ever ～（これまで～した中で、一番～）」です。

使用例①：It doesn't matter where you are now.
使用例②：This soup is gonna be the best I've ever had.
